Tutor of Piano and Music Theory
For James, music has been at the centre of his world since a young age. An excellent performer, he has breadth and depth to his talent; achieving grade VIIIs on the piano, cello and clarinet, along with grades on percussion. His early musical ability was recognised with scholarships to Salisbury Cathedral and Sherborne School, where he studied under Jaime Henderson. Winner of the Haliday (2011, 2015) and Patrick Shelley (2014) music competitions, he was awarded the prize for the Music School’s Contribution to Music at Commemoration on leaving the school in 2015. In 2016 he progressed to Leeds College of Music, where he graduated with a First Class Degree in 2019. He gained a ARSM piano performance diploma in 2017.
James’s fluent and highly confident style is not limited to any one genre; he played keyboard in Sherborne Swing Band, touring Barbados in 2014 with swing, be bop and blues numbers. Classical skills were furthered while studying under Jeremy Davis in London and Svetlana Pinegina in Leeds. He is as much at ease with Mussorgsky, as with Duke Ellington or Adele. Notable appearances include a performance for HM Queen Elizabeth and Duke of Edinburgh in Sherborne Abbey on their Golden Jubilee Your of 2012, playing piano for a One Act Play in Middle Temple, London (2015), Jazz repertoire for a drinks reception in Berkely Square, Mayfair (2016), and various hospitality locations on the South Coast.
