Alexander S.

Tutor of Saxophone, Clarinet, Flute and Music Theory

Chicago-born Saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Alexander is an experienced performer and teacher with nearly a decade under his belt in the industry. He has toured the world as an explosive player in blues and reggae horn sections, among DJs, and most recently as a sideman with funk and jazz bands in South Korea.

Alexander fuses into his playing an eclectic mix of influences, ranging from hard bop and modern jazz, R&B to electronic and chamber music. Key influences in his musical development include Moon Hooch, Eric Alexander, Dave Holland, Hank Mobley, Coltrane, Miles, Stanley Turrentine, Joe Henderson, Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, Peter Bernstein, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and too many more to name.

His teaching style incorporates the philosophies of the Suzuki method – “Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability, just as all children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue”. Students learn to play music they enjoy by both ear and notation, deepening the connection between their inner ears and their instruments. Additionally, Alexander will help each student develop a practice routine, fostering a positive relationship with practicing and improvement.

He is, himself, a student, taking jazz, flute, and contrabass lessons with local musicians in West London. “It’s never too late to start. I connect with students old and young. I’m still in class, and when I’m old I hope to be its oldest student”.

Testimonials

"Early 2022 I bought a Saxophone, by the end of 2022 I found a tutor, Alex who has helped me tap into my passion for playing the saxophone. I’m learning skills that I thought would take me a long time to develop, such as learning by ear and reading music. I’m already learning to play Candy by Cameo, which is a family favourite, goal is to play this at upcoming family gathering in 2023.

As a beginner Alex has helped me to find joy in the process of learning and staying motivated and determined to enjoy the music as I learn. It's true that with the right tutor, you are never too old to pursue your passions and learn something new. I have no hesitation in recommending Alex to others who want to connect with music and the beautiful sound of the saxophone.

I’m certain I’ll continue to improve and enjoy playing the saxophone for years to come, I see this as a long term enriching personal development." - Rudo H
