Daniel L
Guitar, Music Theory and Composition/Arrangement
An alumnus of The BRIT School and the University of East London, Daniel L is a composer and guitarist who has spent the last ten years carving out a new niche in the London music scene – one informed in equal part by video game scores, chart pop and rock anthems, and the furthest reaches of jazz and metal, along with everything in between.
Daniel has supplied this eclectic sound palette to a multitude of projects as a freelance musician. They were selected to compose for MasterCard's 'Social Song' campaign while studying at The BRIT School, writing a set of one hundred musical cells that could be played back in any order, and later wrote music for promotional use by the college itself. During this time they also became a regular member of the school’s pit band, playing to sold-out performances of Legally Blonde and Jesus Christ Superstar and co-writing an original musical.
Since then, Daniel has worked extensively as a session guitarist with artists such as Ekin Oykener, Ula Wodarz, Leah Haworth, and Saara Kaldma, as well as written and performed with acts like Salvador Sin and Four Paws. They released the album Long Faint Lights as one third of progressive pop outfit Tenacity in 2022 following a string of EPs and singles, and have made live appearances with the band across the UK and beyond since its formation in 2017.
Daniel is an integral member of the group, acting not only as a guitarist and songwriter but as its musical director, keeping comprehensive mental and physical records of the band’s music and taking the lead during live shows. In a review for IAMUR, Ryan Bulbeck described Daniel’s contributions to Long Faint Lights as “adding bite, as well as intricate motifs and harmonised refrains.” They are currently working on some exciting new ambient and soundtrack projects.
This breadth of experience directly translates to Daniel’s teaching. A specialist in music theory, they use each student’s musical interests as a springboard, adapting teaching material and methods to suit each tutee’s tastes and following an approach that is highly focused on the individual.
Daniel’s ultimate aim is to give every student the tools to both play the music they love and develop their own creative voice through songwriting and composition.
