Matt H
Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, Music Theory
Matt is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he completed two master’s degrees (MMus and MPerf) with distinction. He teaches students of all ages and abilities, from complete beginners learning their first notes to advanced players preparing for conservatoire auditions. Matt believes that learning music should be fun, engaging and enjoyable, and he creates lessons that help students build confidence while developing a genuine love for music.
A strong advocate for learning both by ear and through notation, Matt encourages students to develop their listening skills, musical awareness and creativity alongside solid music-reading skills. This balanced approach helps learners become versatile, expressive musicians with a deep understanding of the instrument.
As a performer, Matt has appeared at many of the UK’s leading venues, including Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, The Vortex and The 606 Club. He has performed with ensembles such as the London Jazz Orchestra and the London Intercollegiate Jazz Orchestra, and also composes original music for his band, Orchard. The group has received critical acclaim and has been featured on BBC Radio 6 and Jazz FM.
Although primarily a jazz and commercial trumpet player, Matt has a strong foundation in classical music. For students pursuing graded exams, he has extensive experience preparing learners for ABRSM assessments and tailors his teaching to support each student’s goals, musical interests and learning style.
