Richie J
Piano, Theory & Composition
Richie is a British-South African pianist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. He has been teaching piano across London for over 5 years, preparing students for both ABRSM and Trinity exams from grades 1-8. With a Master’s in Composition with Distinction from the Royal College of Music, he combines encouragement, technical guidance, and creativity into lessons, inspiring students to grow in confidence, expression, and musical understanding.
Richie tailors each lesson to the individual student, taking into account their goals and musical aspirations, while maintaining a balanced focus on technical development, core repertoire, improvisation, sight-reading, and broader musicianship skills.
Although classically trained, he enjoys incorporating contemporary songs and modern techniques into his teaching. He looks beyond the notes or chords on the page, aiming to develop not only a strong musical performance but also a deeper understanding, creative freedom, and confidence within the music.
Richie has taught students ranging in age from 6 to 55. He is particularly well-suited to students who want to develop not only their pianistic ability, but also their musicianship, compositional skills, and the confidence to pursue their own musical interests.
Alongside teaching, Richard is an active film composer with credits including The Wild Robot, Alien: Earth, and award-winning short films. Other collaborations include Tête à Tête Opera, English National Ballet School, Frozen Light Theatre, Mo Phoenix, and Seb Masters.
